The Methacton School District - along with many districts nationwide - joins in celebrating National Arts in Education Week, a time dedicated to recognizing the arts within schools as they foster academic achievement, workforce readiness, and student wellness. This year, the week is observed from September 14th to the 20th. Methacton School District has a wide variety of arts programs, including choir, band, orchestra, theatre productions, and visual arts courses.
All schools in the district offer band, chorus, and orchestra. Some elementary schools - such as Arrowhead - provide unique activities like the Tone Chimes Band, where students perform using handbells. With about twelve different music teachers across the district, Methacton students participate in major events such as the winter and spring concerts and the string jamboree. Both Arcola Intermediate School and Methacton High School also offer marching band and annual musical productions.
In the performing arts, both Arcola and Methacton High School stage theatre productions that combine acting, music, dance, and set design. Past high school performances have included The Great Gatsby, Guys and Dolls, Chicago, and A Christmas Carol. In addition, the high school hosts the Warrior Performance Group, dedicated to poetry, song, and dance, highlighting social justice and human rights issues.
Visual Arts are equally emphasized throughout the district. All students participate in art class until high school, where students may then decide to choose additional art courses. Students explore a wide range of media, including acrylic paint, pastels, charcoal, digital art, clay, watercolor, printmaking, and more. Methacton High School also offers AP Art and Design for students to further develop their skills. Each year, schools celebrate their students' accomplishments through art shows.
Methacton School District is proud to celebrate Arts in Education, not just this week, but every week. Through music, theatre, and visual arts, the district continues to encourage creativity, self-expression, and well-roundedness in every student.
