On Veterans Day, Arcola students and staff gathered in the auditorium for a heartfelt tribute to the men and women who have selflessly served our country.

This year’s guest speaker was Staff Sergeant John Henschel, a U.S. Air Force veteran who served as a security police K9 handler. Henschel shared his experiences serving in Vietnam, highlighting the vital role military working dogs played in protecting troops and saving lives during the war. His stories gave students a personal look into the courage and sacrifice of those who served—both human and canine.

As part of the ceremony, winners of the Veterans Day Essay Contest were announced. The students then took the stage to read their essays aloud, reflecting on the meaning of service, patriotism, and gratitude.

The Arcola High School Orchestra opened the assembly with a stirring performance of the National Anthem, setting a respectful tone for the morning. A slideshow followed, featuring photos of students’ and staff members’ friends and family who are veterans or currently serving in the military—a touching reminder of the connections within the Arcola community to those who defend our freedoms.

Through reflection, music, and personal stories, this year’s assembly reminded everyone in attendance of the importance of honoring the sacrifices of our nation’s veterans.
