Arcola Summer Learning
Summer Reading
Summer is a great time to unwind, spend time outdoors, and enjoy time with family and friends. It is also a great time to READ!
In order to help prevent the “summer slide,” we are requesting all students to participate in our Summer Reading Program:
Students may choose at least one book to read over the summer that is appropriate for their current grade level and is something they will share with their classmates upon the return to school in the fall.
- Students should select a book that is comfortable for them to read independently and an appropriate length for a middle school-level book.
- Students are expected to know the title and author of the book that they chose for summer reading when they return to school in August.
- Their summer reading choice should be a book that they are reading for the first time.
- Students should be prepared to discuss and/or write about their chosen book at the start of the new school year. (Suggestion: students may take notes or write a short summary of the book to help refresh their memories before the start of school.)
If you need ideas on books to read, check out the 2025 Reading Olympics book list!
We encourage you to check out all of the great programs available at the Lower Providence Community Library!
Summer Remediation
Summer School Remediation 2025
A student who fails a class with a grade lower than 60% may remediate that course in Methacton’s on-line summer school program (Methacton Virtual Academy via Brandywine Virtual Academy or BVA). We strongly encourage you to register your student for the course(s) that they failed during the school year in order to strengthen their skills in those subject areas, which will benefit them in the next grade.
Arcola On-Line Summer School Information:
● Registration opens on Monday, June 9. Register here.
● All expenses are the responsibility of the family. The cost is $260.00 per course.
● Courses begin on Monday, June 16 and end on Thursday, July 24. THERE ARE NO EXTENSIONS.
● The deadline to register is Wednesday, July 2. However, no additional days can be allotted for those who register for a course after the start date of June 16.
● The expectation is that students will work from home at their own pace to complete the remediation course(s). The estimated time to complete a course is 120 hours.
● If a student is struggling with a summer school course, they may schedule an appointment to meet with the Arcola summer school coordinator, Mark Mueller, at mmueller@methacton.org.
Grading Guidelines
● The grade earned for the course during summer school will be recorded and labeled as “BVA” on the student’s transcript. It does not replace the original failing course grade.
*Questions regarding the failed course should be directed to the teacher of that course*
*Questions regarding summer school should be directed to the Arcola summer school coordinator, Mark Mueller, at mmueller@methacton.org or (610) 489-5000 x30220*
